Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor,

At the direction of the Health Services Foundation Board, University of South Alabama, I am forwarding to you a copy of a resolution recently enacted by that Board. This resolution is an expression of the attitude and spirit of the Health Services Foundation Board with regard to Dr. Frederick Whiddon, President of the University of South Alabama. We hope this will be viewed as a wholesome and refreshing statement of the Foundation Board. The Board feels that the expression of all alternative view points is in the best interest of the University.

Sincerely yours,
Eugene A. Quindlen, M.D.
Health Service Foundation
University of South Alabama

WHEREAS, in view of the unjust criticism contained in a mean-spirited editorial in the Sunday, December 7, 1997, Mobile Press Register, calling for Dr. Whiddon's replacement as President, the Health Services Foundation Board strongly takes issue with the foregoing and desires to set the record straight.

WHEREAS, this editorial appears to be a thinly disguised continuation of past efforts to wrest control of the University into the hands of political and financial interests alien in principles of University governance.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT KNOWN that Dr. Whiddon, the first and only President of the University of South Alabama, the Country's youngest college President when he was named President at age 33 in 1963, has guided and directed the building of what is now known as a great public university of higher education with enrollment of more than 12,000 students.

BE IT FURTHER KNOWN that Dr. Whiddon, who modestly gives credits to many others for these accomplishments, has been the prime motivator, the developer, as well as the brains behind this tremendous growth over the past 34 years.

BE IT FURTHER KNOWN that Dr. Whiddon, through his keen insight, sensitivity and devotion to the cause of learning and his staunch defense of the University as an institution of higher education in the State of Alabama, has never wavered in his belief that a university belongs to the people, and must be preserved as the symbol of academic freedom against all costs.

AND BE IT FINALLY KNOWN that his personal qualities are unparalleled. These include dedication, dogged determination, vitality, expertise and hands-on approach as a university administrator and an ability to achieve success against all odds when others are willing to admit defeat. His services to public higher education and the University as a whole are unequaled. A modest man of impeccable integrity, he never wavers in the interest of expediency in carrying out his duties and responsibilities.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Health Services Foundation Board of the University of South Alabama in regular meeting assembled, that this Board goes on record in paying tribute to Dr. Whiddon and lending its wholehearted support to Dr. Whiddon as President of the University of South Alabama.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this Resolution be furnished to Mr. Newhouse, Owner, and Mr. Howard Bronson, Jr., President, Publisher and CEO of the Mobile Register, The Honorable Fob James, Governor, The Honorable Don Siegleman, Lt. Governor, Editor of Birmingham News, Editor of the Vanguard, Editor of the Harbinger, Editor of the Montgomery Advertiser, all members of the Board of Trustees of the University of South Alabama, as well as all members of the University Foundation, and Dr. Whiddon, and that a copy be spread upon the minutes of this meeting.

ADOPTED in regular meeting assembled on this 15th day of December, 1997.
Eugene A. Quindlen, M.D.
